SLAGA Board Meeting Minutes
Meeting date: April 11, 2012
Present: Tom Wolpert, Nathan Rover, Jim Nelson, Jim Greene, Rich Sheffold, Sarah Chisholm, John Elfrank, Laurie Elfrank.
The treasurer’s report was read and accepted.
Old Business
· Cooperative Effort with the History Museum: The History Museum has returned the GPS units to Jim Green.
· SLAGA Path tags: Sarah Chisholm delivered them at the meeting. They will be available for sale at the spring picnic. The price will be $2 each or 2 for $3.
· Award Pins: PinMart.com has been non-responsive. We are using patches instead of pins for the 100-find awards this time around. We have enough 500-find award pins for current use.
· Lifetime memberships: Six members expressed an interest. The board approved the concept for both individual and family memberships. The cost will be ten times the current cost of the corresponding single-year membership. Family lifetime memberships are tied to the head of household. Tom Wolpert will contact Mike Griffin about setting this up.
New Business
· Shaw Me the Cache event: SLAGA has paid its share of the cost for the event.
· Complete GPS class: The next class is scheduled for Saturday, April 14. We have 6 pre-registered attendees. Tom Wolpert will ask for a couple of additional volunteers on the freelist and the Facebook group.
· April Q&A: Wednesday, April 18, Cliff Cave County Library. Sarah Chisholm will present an updated version of her Pimp Your Cache Page presentation.
· BEAT event: SLAGA will sponsor a booth and family caching activity using temporary caches at the Brain and Spinal Cord Tumor Support Group’s resource fair on Saturday, May 19, in Tower Grove Park. At the Spring Picnic, Tom Wolpert will retrieve cache containers from the trailer for use at this event.
· World Bird Sanctuary: SLAGA declined to participate in a National Trails Day event at WBS due to a scheduling conflict with the Missouri DNR event at Graham Cave State Park on the same day (June 2).
· Spring Picnic: Arrangements were finalized. John Elfrank will do the shopping for supplies and food. Rich Sheffold will obtain gift cards for prizes. Tom Wolpert will purchase 16 Travel Bugs for resale in support of the new TB race to start at the picnic. Tom will also pick up some additional small prize items from the Dollar Store and will set up drawing slips for the premium member drawing.
· Summer Picnic: Cribbage Witch is hosting. The picnic will be July 21 at Indian Camp Creek Park in St. Charles County. The event page has not yet been published.
· Fall Picnic: We do not yet have a host. Nathan Rover will check out facilities in Belleville, IL. Tom Wolpert will contact Steve Bromley about facilities in Columbia, IL and about the possibility of Steve hosting the event.
· Elections: At least two, and possibly three, officers will step aside this year. Tom Wolpert will publicize the nomination process in the next newsletter. Tom will also provide nomination forms at the Spring Picnic.
· MOAHPERD convention: We have received an invitation to give a session at the annual convention of the Missouri Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. SLAGA participated last year and our experience was positive. The board approved an expenditure for one night’s hotel stay for the presenters. John and Laurie Elfrank volunteered to present again this year. The convention will take place sometime in November.
The next meeting is Wednesday, 05/02/12. If you want to attend, please contact one of the officers.

Old Business
· Cooperative Effort with the History Museum: Danny Gonzalez came to give us an overview of the program “Teens Make History.” There are 22 participants this year and they complete a variety of activities. The program will use the SLAGA GPS units one weekend as part of their project.
· Facebook Page: A link to the Facebook group was put on the SLAGA homepage.
· Spring Picnic: Still no details from Tina Boyle. We might have to find another sponsor.
· Leap Day Events: Rock Susan’s event in St. Charles was well attended and everyone had a great time. The same is true for NateDawgCC’s event in the City.
· Question and Answer Session: Scheduled for Monday, March 12 in St. Charles.
· SLAGA Path tags: These are on order and they might be available at the Spring Picnic. The path tags will be the same design with new colors! This version is called SLAGA nights.
· Award Pins: We are still looking for 100 finds award pins. The ones we used previously are not available. We did find a site [Pin Mart - http://www.pinmart.com/custom-lapel-pins/custom-die-struck-lapel-pins.aspx] that seems to offer reasonably priced custom pins. Sarah will contact them to get a firm bid. Once we have that information, we will decide how to proceed.
· St. Louis County Park’s Department Brochure: Once again, the Complete GPS Course and Geocaching 101 are listed in the brochure. The next course is the Complete GPS Course on April 14. Tom will ask for volunteers for these courses and for the SLCC Geocaching Course for Kids in the next newsletter.
· Winter Potluck 2013: Rich talked to Justin about using the Shelter at JB. Justin will get back to him about availability on January 26, 2013 and the cost.
New Business
· Lifetime Memberships: We will poll the membership to see if there is interest in “pre-paying” for a number of years in order to achieve lifetime member status.
· Army Corp of Engineers: They are looking for volunteers for Saturday “Family Geocaching Events.” Erin will send details and we will try to recruit volunteers from the membership.
· Scouting Events: We have been contacted by several Boy Scout leaders asking for volunteers and information about geocaching. When asked for more details, they seldom follow-up.
· Website Hosting: We just paid for another year with our current vendor. Mike Griffin will check out other options so we can make an educated decision by January 2013.
The next meeting is Wednesday, 04/11/12. If you want to attend, please contact one of the officers.

The treasurer’s report was read. After some discussion, it was unanimously approved as submitted.
Old Business
· Milestone Awards: For award and recognition at the Winter Potluck, premium members need to log and report milestones by December 31, 2011. Pins for 100 and 500 finds, as well as personalized coins for 1000 finds, will be ordered. Mike Henthorn is keeping track of the list of awardees.
· Winter Potluck: Jim Greene will provide bingo cards and silent auction sheets. Nathan Rover will take care of nametags. With the cutbacks in the Parks Department budget, we might have to pay for Grant’s Shelter at Jefferson Barracks Park next year. The Board approved that expense.
· Travel Bug Race: The race ends on 12/15. The results will be announced at the Winter Potluck and awards will be given to the winners.
· Cache of the Month: This was introduced in last month’s newsletter and displayed on the home page of the SLAGA site. A few people reviewed the options and fewer people voted. The poll will be offered again in December. Based on participation, we will decide if it should be an on-going activity.
· SLAGA Fizzy Challenge: Tabled until next month
· SLAGA County Challenge and Geocoins: Tabled until next month
· Caching Event at Shaw Arboretum: John Elfrank is working with Candyce54 to plan an event on March 31. SLAGA will pay 50% of the admission charge (about $1.50 per adult). It will be a BYOL (bring your own lunch) event. More details (and cache page) will follow at the end of January.

Old Business
· SLAGA website: All website software has been updated.

· Class Dates for 2012:
